Walk-In Piercings in San Antonio: What to Know Before You Come In

Planning a walk-in piercing in San Antonio? Platinum Tattoos & Piercings covers everything — age requirements, what to bring, what to wear, and the best times to visit.

Walk-In Piercings in San Antonio: What to Know Before You Come In

One of the questions we hear most at Platinum Tattoos & Piercings: "Do I need an appointment, or can I just walk in?"

Good news — most piercings are walk-in friendly. You don't need to call ahead, book online, or plan weeks in advance. If you wake up on a Saturday morning and decide today's the day you're getting that nostril piercing, you can literally just show up.

That said, a little preparation goes a long way. Knowing what to bring, what to eat, what to wear, and when to come can make the difference between a smooth, enjoyable experience and an avoidable headache.

Here's everything you need to know before walking in for a piercing in San Antonio.

Which Piercings Are Walk-In Friendly?

Short answer: almost all of them.

At Platinum Tattoos & Piercings, the majority of our piercings are available on a walk-in basis. That includes:

  • Earlobes — Standard lobe piercings, seconds, thirds, and beyond
  • Ear cartilage — Helix, forward helix, conch, tragus, daith, rook, snug, industrial
  • Nostril — Single or double nostril piercings
  • Septum — The classic septum piercing through the "sweet spot"
  • Lip and oral — Labret, Monroe, Medusa, vertical labret, snake bites, spider bites
  • Eyebrow — Standard eyebrow piercings
  • Navel — Belly button piercings (standard and floating navel)
  • Nipple — Available as walk-in, though we appreciate if you mention it at the counter so we can ensure a private room is ready
  • Body piercings — Surface piercings and other body work may be walk-in depending on the day and piercer availability

When might you need an appointment? Complex projects — like a curated ear setup with multiple piercings in one session, or specialty piercings that require specific piercer expertise — benefit from scheduling ahead. But for the vast majority of piercings, walk-ins are how it works.

If you want to confirm that a specific piercing is available walk-in on a particular day, you're always welcome to call ahead. But don't feel like you have to.

Age Requirements and ID

This is the section where preparation really matters. If you don't have proper ID, we can't pierce you — no exceptions, no workarounds, no "but I swear I'm 18." It's Texas state law and our professional obligation.

If You're 18 or Older

  • Bring a valid, government-issued photo ID — driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID
  • That's it. You're an adult, you can consent for yourself, and you're good to go

If You're Under 18 (Minors)

Minors need both of the following:

  1. A parent or legal guardian must be physically present. Not on the phone, not on FaceTime, not waiting in the car. In the building, at the counter, signing paperwork.
  2. Both the minor AND the parent/guardian must have valid photo ID. The parent needs to show government-issued photo ID, and the minor needs ID that shows their date of birth (school ID, birth certificate, passport, etc.).

Matching last names or proof of guardianship may be required if the minor and accompanying adult have different last names. Bring documentation (birth certificate, court custody paperwork, etc.) if this applies.

What piercings can minors get? This varies by age and parental consent. Earlobes are generally available for younger teens with parental consent. Other piercings (nostril, cartilage, etc.) typically require the minor to be a certain age. Our piercers will discuss what's appropriate on a case-by-case basis — we prioritize the safety and suitability of each piercing for the individual.

What piercings are 18+ only? Some piercings — including nipple and certain genital piercings — require the client to be 18 or older, regardless of parental consent.

Don't Have Your ID?

Come back when you do. We know it's frustrating, but we can't make exceptions. It protects you, it protects us, and it's the law. We'll be here when you've got it sorted.

What to Eat and Drink Before Your Piercing

This is the most overlooked piece of preparation, and it makes a bigger difference than people realize.

Eat a Real Meal

Eat a solid meal 1–2 hours before your piercing. Not a granola bar. Not a bag of chips from the gas station. An actual meal — something with protein, complex carbs, and substance.

Why? Getting pierced causes an adrenaline response. Your body releases stress hormones, your blood sugar can fluctuate, and if you haven't eaten, you're significantly more likely to feel lightheaded, dizzy, nauseous, or faint.

We see it every week: someone comes in on an empty stomach, gets pierced, and suddenly they're pale, sweating, and needing to sit with their head between their knees for 15 minutes. It's not a pain tolerance issue — it's a blood sugar issue. And it's completely preventable.

Good pre-piercing meals:

  • A sandwich or wrap with protein
  • Eggs and toast
  • Rice and chicken
  • A burger (yes, really — before a piercing, calories are your friend)
  • Pasta with a protein source

Bad pre-piercing "meals":

  • Nothing (worst option)
  • Just coffee (caffeine on an empty stomach before a piercing is a recipe for dizziness)
  • A handful of candy
  • A smoothie only (liquid calories don't stabilize blood sugar the same way)

Stay Hydrated

Drink water throughout the day. Dehydration makes everything worse — it can lower your blood pressure, make veins and tissue less pliable, and increase your chances of feeling faint. You don't need to chug a gallon, but make sure you're not walking in parched.

What to Avoid

  • Alcohol. Do not drink before getting pierced. Alcohol thins your blood (increasing bleeding), impairs your judgment, and we will refuse to pierce you if you're intoxicated. This is non-negotiable.
  • Excessive caffeine. A cup of coffee is fine. Four espressos are not. Caffeine can increase anxiety and make you jittery, which doesn't help when you need to hold still.
  • Blood thinners. If you take prescription blood thinners, consult your doctor before getting pierced. If you've taken aspirin or ibuprofen, be aware that they can increase bleeding — it's not a dealbreaker, but worth mentioning to your piercer.

What to Wear

What you wear to your piercing appointment can make the experience significantly more comfortable — or significantly more awkward. Here's a quick guide by piercing type:

Ear Piercings (Lobe, Cartilage, Industrial, etc.)

  • Wear your hair up or pulled back so we have clear access to your ears
  • Remove earbuds/AirPods before you arrive (obvious, but you'd be surprised)
  • Skip the hoop earrings and ear cuffs — you'll need to take them out for certain piercings, and it's easier if they're not there
  • Clothing doesn't matter much for ear piercings — wear whatever's comfortable

Nostril and Septum Piercings

  • Skip heavy face makeup around the nose area. We'll clean the area regardless, but caked-on foundation adds a step
  • Remove any nose jewelry you're currently wearing (if getting a second nostril or switching sides)
  • Bring tissues if you tend to have a runny nose — the piercing can trigger some temporary watering

Lip and Oral Piercings

  • Avoid heavy lipstick or lip gloss on the day of your piercing
  • Brush your teeth before you come in (for oral piercings specifically)
  • Remove any existing oral jewelry if you're getting additional lip piercings

Navel Piercings

  • Wear a shirt you can easily lift or a crop top. High-waisted, tight jeans with a belt that you have to fully undress to expose your navel? That's going to slow things down.
  • Low-rise or mid-rise pants/shorts are ideal — the waistband shouldn't press against the piercing area
  • Skip the bodysuit or romper unless you're comfortable being partially undressed in the piercing room

Nipple Piercings

  • Wear a comfortable bra or bralette that you won't mind putting back on over a fresh piercing. Sports bras are great — they provide support without underwire pressing on new piercings.
  • A button-up or zip-up top is easier than a pullover — you won't have to lift a shirt over your head with fresh nipple piercings.
  • For women: A supportive but not tight bra helps after the piercing. Going braless is fine too — whatever's comfortable for you.

General Tips

  • Wear comfortable clothes. You'll be sitting or lying down for the piercing, and you may feel a little woozy afterward. Tight, restrictive clothing isn't your friend.
  • Layers are smart. Piercing rooms can be cool, and your body temperature may fluctuate after the adrenaline hit. A light jacket or hoodie gives you options.
  • Dark colors are a practical choice if you're worried about any minor bleeding.

Pricing Expectations

We're not going to quote specific prices here because pricing can vary by piercing type, jewelry selection, and any promotions we might be running. But here's a general framework:

What You're Paying For

When you get pierced at Platinum Tattoos & Piercings, your price typically includes:

  • The piercing service itself — performed by an experienced, professional piercer
  • Quality starter jewelry — implant-grade titanium (NeoMetal or Anatometal) or other body-safe material appropriate for the piercing
  • Aftercare instructions — thorough guidance on how to care for your new piercing
  • Follow-up support — we're here for questions, check-ins, and troubleshooting throughout your healing process

What Affects Pricing

  • Piercing location. A standard earlobe is simpler than a daith or industrial. Different piercings require different levels of skill, time, and specialized jewelry.
  • Jewelry selection. Upgrading from titanium to 14kt gold, or choosing a more elaborate end (gemstones, clusters, etc.) will increase the cost.
  • Multiple piercings in one session. Getting several piercings at once? Ask about any multi-piercing pricing.

What You Shouldn't Do

  • Don't choose a piercer based solely on the cheapest price. A $15 earlobe piercing at a mall kiosk using a gun and mystery-metal butterfly studs is not the same as a professional piercing with implant-grade jewelry. You're putting something in your body — quality matters.
  • Don't be afraid to ask about pricing. Walk in, tell us what you want, and we'll give you a clear price before anything happens. No surprises.

Best Times to Come for Shorter Waits

Walk-in piercings are first-come, first-served, and wait times depend on how many people are ahead of you. Here are some tips for minimizing your wait:

Best Times (Typically Shorter Waits)

  • Weekday mornings and early afternoons (especially Tuesday through Thursday) tend to be our quietest times. If you have a flexible schedule, this is the move.
  • Right at opening is often a sweet spot — you're first in line before the day gets busy.
  • Late afternoon on weekdays can also be relatively calm, especially mid-week.

Busiest Times (Expect a Wait)

  • Friday evenings and all day Saturday are consistently our busiest times. Everyone's off work, groups come in together, and the energy is high — but so is the wait.
  • Sunday afternoons can also be busy.
  • Holidays and special events (like Friday the 13th tattoo events) bring extra traffic. Plan accordingly.
  • First and 15th of the month (paydays) tend to see higher volume.

Tips to Reduce Your Wait

  • Come early. Seriously — if you know you want a Saturday piercing, be there shortly after we open.
  • Come alone or in a small group. A group of 8 all wanting piercings is going to take a while. If you're the one who actually wants the piercing, bring one friend for moral support, not your entire friend group.
  • Know what you want. If you walk in and say "I want a nostril piercing with a small titanium stud," we can get you in fast. If you spend 45 minutes browsing jewelry and debating between seven piercing locations, the process takes longer (which is fine — but factor it into your time).
  • Call ahead to ask about current wait times if you're on the fence about when to come.

What to Expect When You Walk In

Never been to a professional piercing studio? Here's the typical flow:

  1. Walk in and check in at the front counter. Let us know what piercing you're interested in. We'll ask for your ID.
  2. Fill out paperwork. Standard consent forms and health questionnaire. This is quick — usually just a few minutes.
  3. Browse jewelry (if needed). If you want to upgrade from the standard starter or pick a specific look, our staff will walk you through options.
  4. Wait for your piercer. Depending on the day, this could be immediate or might take a bit. We'll keep you updated.
  5. Consultation and marking. Your piercer will discuss the placement with you, mark the spot, and have you approve the positioning before any needles come out.
  6. The piercing. This is the quick part — most piercings take seconds. A deep breath, a brief pinch, and it's done.
  7. Aftercare walkthrough. Your piercer will go over cleaning instructions, what to expect during healing, and when to come back for a downsize (typically 5–7 weeks for most piercings).
  8. Pay and go. That's it. You've got a new piercing.

The whole process — from walking in the door to walking out with your new piercing — typically takes 15–45 minutes, depending on wait time and jewelry selection. The actual piercing itself? Usually under a minute.

Aftercare Preview

We'll give you full aftercare instructions at your appointment, but here's the essentials:

  • Clean with NeilMed Piercing Aftercare Fine Mist saline — spray on the piercing 1–2 times daily
  • Don't touch it with unwashed hands (better yet, just don't touch it)
  • Don't rotate, twist, or play with the jewelry — this is old advice that actually harms the healing process
  • Come back for your downsize around 5–7 weeks — your initial jewelry is longer to accommodate swelling, and once the swelling goes down, you'll need a shorter piece to prevent snagging and irritation
  • Be patient — piercings take months to fully heal, some up to a year. Follow the plan and your body will do the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an appointment for a piercing at Platinum Tattoos & Piercings?

Nope — most piercings are available as walk-ins. Just come in during business hours with your ID and you're good to go. For complex multi-piercing projects or specialty work, calling ahead can be helpful, but it's not required.

What ID do I need to get pierced?

If you're 18+, bring a valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, state ID, or military ID). If you're under 18, you need a parent or legal guardian physically present with their own photo ID, plus your ID or birth certificate.

Can my parent sign for me over the phone?

No. A parent or legal guardian must be physically present at the shop to provide consent for a minor's piercing. Phone consent, FaceTime, written notes, and notarized letters are not accepted. This is for your safety and is consistent with Texas regulations.

How much does a piercing cost?

Pricing varies by piercing type and jewelry selection. Visit either location and we'll give you a clear, upfront price before any work is done. Your price typically includes the piercing service, quality implant-grade starter jewelry, and aftercare guidance.

Does it hurt?

Honestly? A little. Every piercing involves a needle passing through tissue — there's no way to make that sensation-free. But most piercings take only seconds, and the actual pain is brief. Clients consistently tell us it was less painful than they expected. Eating a proper meal beforehand, staying hydrated, and staying calm make a big difference.

What's the youngest age you'll pierce?

This depends on the piercing type and is evaluated case-by-case. Earlobe piercings are available for younger clients with parental consent and presence. Other piercings have minimum age guidelines. Some piercings (nipple, etc.) are strictly 18+. Call us or come in and we'll discuss what's appropriate.

Can I bring my friends?

Of course — but keep the group manageable. One or two friends for moral support is great. A group of ten can get crowded in the piercing room and may increase wait times for everyone. Your support crew can hang out in the shop while you're getting pierced.

Do you use a piercing gun?

Never. Piercing guns cannot be properly sterilized, use blunt-force trauma to push jewelry through tissue, and typically insert low-quality butterfly-back studs at inappropriate gauges. All of our piercings are performed with single-use, sterile, hollow needles by trained professional piercers. It's safer, more precise, and heals better.

When do I need to come back for a downsize?

Most piercings need a jewelry downsize around 5–7 weeks after the initial piercing. Your starter jewelry is intentionally longer to accommodate initial swelling. Once the swelling subsides, a shorter post prevents the jewelry from snagging, shifting, and causing irritation bumps. We'll remind you at your appointment — don't skip this step.

What's the difference between your Loop 410 and North Star locations?

Our Loop 410 location (5545 NW Loop 410) is our full-service flagship — tattoos and piercings. Our North Star location is a dedicated piercing studio — piercings only. Both locations maintain the same standards for quality, sterilization, and jewelry selection. Choose whichever is more convenient.
