Quick Answer
Lettering tattoos turn words into art — names, quotes, dates, and meaningful phrases rendered in styles ranging from elegant calligraphy to bold block letters. Getting lettering right is deceptively hard: spacing, flow, readability, and placement all have to be perfect.
Popular styles include cursive script, gothic blackletter, typewriter fonts, handwritten styles, custom calligraphy, and bold serif and sans-serif typography. The best lettering artists do not just copy a font from a computer — they design custom typography that flows with your body's curves and contours. The way letters wrap around a forearm or arc across a collarbone requires understanding how flat design translates to three-dimensional surfaces.
Lettering carries deep personal meaning for most people who get it. Names of children, memorial dates, lines from songs or poems, religious text, motivational phrases — these are words that matter enough to wear permanently. That weight of meaning is exactly why execution needs to be flawless.
There is no "close enough" with lettering.
At BÁRÛ MU, our lettering specialists understand that every word tells a story. We will work with you on font selection, sizing, and placement to make sure your piece reads beautifully from every angle. With over two decades in San Antonio and a team of 7 artists, we have lettering specialists who have perfected the art of putting words on skin.
We treat lettering with the same seriousness as any other custom tattoo. Your artist will create custom layouts, adjust letter spacing for your specific placement, and ensure the overall composition flows naturally with your body. We do not just type your words into a font generator and print a stencil — this is custom work.
Start with a free consultation. Know what you want to say, and have some ideas about the style direction — but you do not need to have the perfect font picked out. That is your artist's expertise.
Bring examples of lettering styles you like, and discuss the mood you want the piece to convey. Elegant and flowing? Bold and commanding?
Raw and handwritten? Each direction requires a different approach.
Your artist will create a custom layout showing your text in the chosen style, sized and formatted for your specific body placement. You will see the stencil before any ink touches skin, and adjustments are part of the process. For longer text — full quotes, paragraphs, song lyrics — placement and sizing become especially critical.
Your artist will guide you toward a size that maintains readability over time.
Lettering sessions are typically on the shorter side for smaller pieces. A name or short phrase takes 30 minutes to 2 hours. Longer quotes or full-torso lettering can run 3 to 6 hours.
Multi-line compositions or lettering combined with decorative elements add time. Your artist will provide a clear time estimate during the consultation.
Lettering tattoos are placed everywhere — forearms, upper arms, chest, ribs, back, collarbone, wrists, hands, fingers, neck, and more. The most popular placements are inner forearms for text meant to be read by the wearer, and outer forearms, upper arms, and chest for text meant to be displayed. Ribs and collarbone are popular for meaningful quotes, though both are on the more painful end.
The pain experience for lettering depends entirely on placement. The tattooing itself is typically linework only (no shading or color), which means sessions are efficient and the needle time per letter is minimal. However, bony areas and sensitive spots will always be uncomfortable regardless of how quick the actual work is.
Finger, hand, and rib lettering are the spiciest placements.
Lettering tattoos heal quickly since they typically involve only black linework without shading or color fills. Surface healing takes about 2 weeks, with full settling in 4 to 6 weeks. The healing process is usually straightforward — light peeling, minimal swelling, and quick recovery.
Fine script and delicate lettering require careful attention during healing to preserve crisp letter forms.
Standard aftercare applies: gentle washing with unscented soap, thin moisturizer, no sun or water submersion. For fine or very small lettering, be especially careful during the peeling phase — picking at scabs can pull ink from thin lines and compromise readability. Once healed, sun protection keeps black ink crisp and prevents premature fading.
Lettering tattoos at BÁRÛ MU range from $100 to $200 per hour, with most falling toward the lower end of that range since lettering is often quicker than other styles. Simple names and short phrases typically cost $100 to $250. Longer quotes, multi-line compositions, or elaborate calligraphy runs $250 to $600.
Large-scale lettering projects — full back quotes, ribcage text, or lettering combined with illustrative elements — can range from $500 to $1,500 or more.
We have a shop minimum that covers sterile setup and your artist's time regardless of how small the text is. Very small, simple lettering still requires the same setup and precision as larger work.
