Quick Answer

Septum piercings go through the thin membrane (the "sweet spot") between the cartilage and the bottom of your nose. When placed correctly in this columella โ€” the thin strip of tissue at the front of the nasal septum โ€” they are one of the least painful piercings and heal relatively quickly.

Septum piercings have a rich cultural history spanning thousands of years. They have been worn by Indigenous peoples across the Americas, Australia, and the Pacific Islands, as well as in South Asian and Middle Eastern cultures. In modern Western culture, septums gained popularity in the punk and alternative scenes of the 1990s and have since become one of the most mainstream facial piercings.

Today you see them on everyone from college students to professionals to grandparents.

The beauty of septum piercings is their versatility โ€” flip them up for work, wear them down for going out. With a horseshoe barbell or retainer, a septum piercing can be completely hidden inside the nose when needed. This makes it one of the most workplace-friendly facial piercings available.

Jewelry ranges from simple horseshoe barbells to ornate clickers, seamless rings, stacked rings, and decorative pieces with gemstones.

WHY CHOOSE Maribel's Boutique FOR SEPTUM PIERCINGS

Finding the sweet spot requires experience and precision. At Maribel's Boutique, our piercers have done thousands of septums and know exactly where to place them for comfort, aesthetics, and proper healing. Not every piercer has the skill to locate the sweet spot consistently โ€” if they miss it and pierce through cartilage, the pain is significantly worse and healing is much longer.

Our piercers get it right the first time.

With over two decades of experience and a commitment to implant-grade materials and sterile technique, Maribel's Boutique is the safe, professional choice for septum piercings in San Antonio. We use single-use sterile needles, implant-grade titanium jewelry, and autoclave sterilization for all equipment. Your safety and comfort are our top priorities.

The Piercing Process

Your piercer will start by feeling for the sweet spot โ€” they will gently pinch and manipulate the tissue at the bottom of your septum to locate the thin membrane. Once found, they will position a receiving tube inside the nose and perform the piercing with a single-use needle. The needle passes through the sweet spot in about one second, and the jewelry is immediately inserted.

The entire appointment takes about 15 to 20 minutes including consultation and aftercare discussion. The piercing itself is remarkably quick. Most people experience a sharp sting followed by watery eyes and maybe a sneeze reflex.

Within a few minutes, the initial intensity fades to mild tenderness. Many clients say the septum piercing was easier than they anticipated.

Jewelry Options

The most common starter jewelry for septum piercings is a circular barbell (horseshoe) in implant-grade titanium. This allows you to flip the piercing up during healing if needed. Once healed (6 to 8 weeks), you can switch to clickers, seamless rings, captive bead rings, pinchers, stacked rings, or retainers.

Materials include implant-grade titanium, niobium, 14k and 18k gold, and surgical steel. The initial piercing price includes your starter horseshoe barbell.

Pain and Healing

Most people rate septum piercings at a 3 to 4 out of 10 when placed correctly through the sweet spot. You will feel a sharp sting, your eyes will water reflexively, and you might sneeze. The intense part lasts about 2 seconds.

If a piercer goes through cartilage instead of the sweet spot, the pain is significantly worse โ€” this is why choosing an experienced piercer matters so much.

Septum piercings heal in 6 to 8 weeks for most people, making them one of the faster-healing piercings. During healing, expect some tenderness when the nose is bumped, occasional crusties (dried lymph fluid) around the jewelry, and mild sensitivity. The septum heals relatively quickly because the sweet spot tissue has good blood flow and is protected inside the nose.

Aftercare

Clean your septum piercing twice daily with sterile saline solution. You can soak a cotton pad with saline and hold it gently against both sides of the piercing, or use a saline spray. Do not twist or rotate the jewelry.

Be gentle when blowing your nose. Avoid submerging in water (pools, hot tubs, lakes) during healing. If you flip the jewelry up, make sure your hands are clean first and do not flip it repeatedly throughout the day โ€” pick a position and leave it.

Pricing

Septum piercings at Maribel's Boutique typically range from $40 to $65 depending on jewelry selection. The base price includes the piercing and an implant-grade titanium circular barbell. Upgrades to clickers, gold jewelry, or decorative pieces are available at additional cost.
