Threadless Jewelry 101: Why Every Piercer Recommends Push-Pin Ends
Threadless jewelry — sometimes called push-pin or flatback — has become the professional standard for good reason. Secure, comfortable, and endlessly customizable, it's worth understanding how it works.
Threadless Jewelry 101: Why Every Piercer Recommends Push-Pin Ends
If you've had piercings done at a professional studio in the last decade, you've almost certainly worn threadless jewelry — even if you didn't know the name for it. That flat-back post with the little press-fit top? Threadless. The reason you can swap the decorative end without removing the whole piece? Threadless. The reason your jewelry doesn't have a butterfly back to lose in the sink? Threadless.
At Platinum Body Piercings near North Star Mall in San Antonio, threadless is our system of choice for the majority of initial piercings and long-term jewelry. Here's why — and how it works.
How Threadless Jewelry Works
Traditional body jewelry uses one of two attachment systems: externally threaded (the post has threads on the outside, the end screws on) or internally threaded (the end has a small threaded pin that screws into a hollow post). Both work, but both have drawbacks — stripped threads, difficult assembly, and the threaded backings that vanish into carpet or drains.
Threadless (also called push-pin) jewelry solves this with an elegantly simple mechanism:
- The post is a flat-back labret style — a flat disc on one end, open hollow on the other end that sits at the piercing surface.
- The decorative end (top) has a thin pin protruding from its back. That pin is bent slightly — not straight.
- When you insert the bent pin into the hollow post, the tension created by the bend creates a secure friction fit.
The result: a secure hold with no threading to strip, a flat low-profile back that sits comfortably against skin, and the ability to swap decorative tops independently of the post. One post, endless top options — swap from a simple opal to a statement gem cluster to a gold flower without changing the actual post in your piercing.
Why It's Better Than Threaded
The advantages of threadless over threaded become obvious in daily use:
No stripped threads. Externally threaded jewelry's biggest failure mode: the sharp edges on external threads can damage tissue during insertion (especially into fresh piercings), and the threads themselves eventually strip after enough assembly cycles. Threadless eliminates this entirely.
Easier assembly. Threading a 16g internally threaded piece together behind your ear or in a spot you can't easily see is genuinely difficult. The threadless press-fit goes together with a pinch and a push — much more manageable.
No hardware to lose. Traditional butterfly or disc backings get lost constantly. The threadless system has no separate backing — the post is self-contained.
Interchangeable tops. This is the game-changer for anyone who loves jewelry variety. Your post stays in your piercing; only the top changes. You can build a collection of threadless tops and rotate them freely, giving you an enormous range of looks without multiple full jewelry pieces.
Brands Worth Knowing: Tawapa, NeoMetal, and Anatometal
Not all threadless jewelry is equal. The brands that matter are the ones that hold their tolerances and use verified implant-grade materials:
Tawapa. San Francisco-based, known for exquisite ornate designs — particularly their floral and nature-inspired ends in 14k and 18k gold. Tawapa pieces are genuine jewelry-quality work. If you want something that makes people ask "where did you get that," Tawapa is usually the answer.
NeoMetal. One of the most trusted names in implant-grade titanium jewelry. NeoMetal's threadless system is the standard against which others are measured. Excellent range from simple basics to more decorative options, all in ASTM F-136 titanium or 14k gold. Reliable, consistent, widely loved by piercers.
Anatometal. Known for handcrafted precision and stunning gem-set pieces in implant-grade titanium and gold. Anatometal jewelry has an almost museum-quality aesthetic and exceptional material standards. Their pieces are investment items — priced accordingly, but they last forever.

Swapping Threadless Ends
One of the questions we get most: "Can I change the top myself?" The answer is yes, once your piercing is fully healed — but with a caveat.
To change a threadless top, you squeeze the post and top simultaneously between two fingers and pull them apart gently — the bent pin disengages from the post. To reinsert, you hold the post steady (either leave it in the piercing or use a receiving tube), insert the pin into the hollow opening, and press the top in until you feel the tension snap into place.
The tricky part is adjusting the pin tension if the fit becomes loose over time. The pin should have a slight bend — if it's been straightened (which happens with repeated assembly), the hold will be weaker. A quick visit to your piercer fixes this in seconds; they'll re-bend the pin to restore full tension.
When to Upgrade to Threadless
If you're currently wearing threaded jewelry in healed piercings and you're tired of the hassle — any time is a good time to upgrade. Come in for a jewelry change appointment, and we'll swap you to threadless and properly fit the post to your anatomy.
For new piercings, we start the majority of clients in threadless flatbacks immediately — the low-profile back is kinder to healing tissue than a raised disc or wing backing. Service fees start at $35. Find us near North Star Mall in San Antonio.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does threadless jewelry work?
A threadless piece consists of two parts: a flat-back post (the part that goes through the piercing) and a decorative end (the top). The end has a slightly bent pin that inserts into the hollow post. The tension from that bent pin creates a secure hold — no threads to strip, no backing to unscrew and lose.
Is threadless jewelry actually secure? Will it fall out?
When properly assembled by a piercer, threadless jewelry is extremely secure — the tension fit is stronger than most people expect. The key is correct tension in the pin. If your jewelry keeps coming loose, the pin tension needs to be adjusted, which any piercer can do in about 10 seconds.
Can I mix and match threadless ends between brands?
Threadless posts and ends are generally interchangeable between brands in the same gauge, but check before assuming. Tawapa, NeoMetal, and Anatometal all use compatible systems. Cheaper brands with inconsistent sizing may not be compatible and can compromise the secure fit.
When should I upgrade to threadless jewelry from a standard barbell?
You can use threadless jewelry at any stage, but most piercers recommend it for initial piercings because the low-profile flat back sits more comfortably against the skin than a threaded disc. For healed piercings, threadless is the premier choice for anyone who wants easy top-changes without removing the post.
