Ear Piercings & Curated Ears

Piercing GuidePlatinum Tattoos & Piercings · San Antonio, TX

Ear piercings go way beyond the basic lobe. The modern ear piercing landscape includes a huge variety of placements — helix, conch, tragus, daith, rook, flat, forward helix, industrial, snug, anti-tragus, and of course classic lobes. Each placement has its own look, healing timeline, and anatomy requirements. A curated ear project combines multiple piercings into a cohesive, personalized arrangement that is uniquely yours.

Curated ears have become one of the most popular trends in body modification, and for good reason. Instead of randomly adding piercings over time, a curated approach treats your entire ear as a canvas. Your piercer considers the overall composition — how different piercings relate to each other, how jewelry styles complement each other, and how the arrangement balances with your specific ear anatomy.

The key to a great curated ear is understanding anatomy, jewelry selection, and aesthetic balance. Not every ear can accommodate every piercing — the shape of your cartilage, the size of your conch bowl, the prominence of your tragus, and the thickness of your helix all determine what is possible. Placement matters enormously for both looks and healing. A skilled piercer reads your anatomy and works with it rather than forcing placements that will not heal well.

WHY CHOOSE Platinum Tattoos & Piercings FOR EAR PIERCINGS

At Platinum Tattoos & Piercings, our piercers specialize in curated ear designs. We will assess your anatomy, discuss your vision, and map out a piercing plan that looks incredible — whether you are adding one piece or building a full constellation. With over 26 years in business and professional piercers who use only needle-based techniques and implant-grade titanium, we take ear piercings as seriously as any other body modification.

We never use piercing guns — ever. Guns force blunt studs through tissue, cause unnecessary trauma, cannot be properly sterilized, and limit jewelry options. Every ear piercing at Platinum Tattoos & Piercings is performed with a single-use sterile needle and implant-grade jewelry. Your ears deserve better than a mall kiosk experience.

The Piercing Process

When you walk in for an ear piercing, your piercer will start by examining your ear anatomy and discussing what you want. If you are building a curated ear, they will help you plan the full layout — even if you are only getting one piercing today. They will mark the precise placement with a surgical marker and have you check it in a mirror. No needle touches skin until you are completely happy with the position.

The actual piercing takes just a few seconds — a quick, sharp sensation followed by immediate relief. Your piercer will insert the jewelry, check everything for proper placement and alignment, and clean the area. The entire appointment typically takes 15 to 30 minutes including consultation, marking, and aftercare discussion. For multiple piercings in one session, allow 30 to 60 minutes.

Jewelry Options

We stock a wide range of implant-grade titanium jewelry in various styles — flat-back labret studs, seamless rings, clickers, curved barbells, and decorative ends with genuine gemstones and Swarovski crystals. The piercing price includes a starter piece of implant-grade titanium jewelry. Upgrades to 14k gold, BVLA, and other premium jewelry lines are available at additional cost.

Jewelry selection is part of the curated ear experience. Your piercer will help you choose pieces that complement each other and create the overall aesthetic you are going for — whether that is minimal and modern, bold and colorful, or elegant and refined.

Pain And Healing

Pain for ear piercings varies by placement. Standard lobes are about a 2 out of 10 — barely anything. Helix and flat piercings are around 3 to 4. Tragus, conch, and rook piercings are 4 to 5. Daith piercings are about a 5. Industrial piercings, which pass through two cartilage points, are a solid 5 to 6. Most people are surprised by how quick and manageable the actual piercing is — the anticipation is worse than the act.

Healing times vary significantly by placement. Lobes heal in 6 to 8 weeks. Cartilage piercings — helix, conch, tragus, daith, rook, flat — take 6 to 12 months for full healing. Industrials are in the 9 to 12 month range. During healing, expect some initial swelling, occasional tenderness, and possible discharge of clear or whitish fluid (lymph), which is normal and not a sign of infection.

Aftercare

Keep it simple: clean your piercing 2 times a day with sterile saline solution (we recommend NeilMed wound wash). Do not twist, turn, or sleep on fresh piercings. Avoid touching with unwashed hands. No swimming pools, hot tubs, or submerging in water until healed. Avoid changing jewelry too early — wait until your piercer gives you the all-clear, which is usually after the full healing period.

Come back for a check-up at 4 to 6 weeks, and your piercer will assess healing and downsize your jewelry if appropriate. Downsizing is important for cartilage piercings — the longer initial post accommodates swelling, but once swelling subsides, a shorter post reduces the risk of snagging and promotes better healing.

Pricing

Ear piercings at Platinum Tattoos & Piercings range from $30 to $80 depending on the placement and jewelry selection. Standard lobes start at the lower end, while cartilage piercings like conch, daith, and industrial are at the higher end. The piercing price includes implant-grade titanium starter jewelry. Premium jewelry upgrades are available at additional cost. Multiple piercings in one session may qualify for package pricing — ask your piercer about curated ear packages.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old do you have to be to get an ear piercing?

We pierce earlobes on clients 6 months and older (with a parent or legal guardian present and consenting). Cartilage piercings require a minimum age of 16 with parental consent, or 18 without. Valid photo ID is required for everyone.

Can I get multiple ear piercings in one session?

Yes, most people can comfortably get 2 to 3 piercings in a single session. More than 3 is possible but depends on your anatomy, placement, and pain tolerance. Your piercer will advise on what makes sense for your specific situation.

When can I change my ear piercing jewelry?

Lobe piercings can typically be changed at 6 to 8 weeks. Cartilage piercings should wait 6 to 12 months depending on the placement. Changing jewelry too early can irritate the piercing and set back healing. Come in and let your piercer assess before you change anything.

When can I swim after getting an ear piercing?

Avoid pools, hot tubs, lakes, and oceans for at least 4 weeks for lobes and 8 to 12 weeks for cartilage piercings. Chlorine, bacteria, and other contaminants in water can cause irritation or infection in healing piercings.

Will my ear piercing close if I take the jewelry out?

Fresh piercings can close within hours. Well-healed piercings (worn for a year or more) may stay open for days to weeks without jewelry, but there are no guarantees. If you need to remove jewelry temporarily, come in and we can insert a retainer to hold the hole open.

Do you use piercing guns?

Never. Piercing guns cannot be properly sterilized, use blunt force that causes unnecessary tissue damage, and limit jewelry options to low-quality butterfly-back studs. All piercings at Platinum Tattoos & Piercings are performed with single-use sterile needles and implant-grade titanium jewelry.
