Got a new tattoo? Here's exactly what to do — hour by hour on day one, through the first two weeks, and into long-term care. Do this right and your tattoo will look great for decades.

Complete Tattoo Aftercare Guide: Day 1 Through Fully Healed

A tattoo is only as good as its healing. You can get the best work in the world from the best artist in San Antonio — but if you don't take care of it, you'll end up with a muddy, faded, blown-out mess. The healing process is your responsibility, and it's not complicated. But it does require consistency.

This is the aftercare guide we stand behind at Platinum Tattoos & Piercings on Loop 410. Follow it. Your tattoo will thank you.

The First Few Hours (Day 1)

Leaving the Shop

Your artist will cover your fresh tattoo with either a traditional bandage, cling wrap, or a second-skin/saniderm bandage. These serve different purposes:

  • Traditional bandage/cling wrap: Remove after 2–4 hours. Wash gently with clean hands and fragrance-free soap. Pat dry.
  • Second-skin (Saniderm/Tegaderm): Can stay on 24 hours to 3 days. You'll see plasma and ink collecting under it — that's normal. Don't panic. Remove by peeling slowly in the shower under warm water.

First Wash

Use clean hands — never a washcloth or loofah. Fragrance-free liquid soap (Dial Gold or Cetaphil are fine). Gentle circular motion, rinse completely, pat dry with a clean paper towel. Air dry for 5–10 minutes, then apply a thin layer of aftercare.

First Moisturizer Application

Thin film only — you want the tattoo to breathe. Aquaphor works well in the first few days. After that, switch to an unscented lotion like Lubriderm or Aveeno. More is not better. If it looks shiny and greasy, you've applied too much.

Days 2–7: The Critical Week

Repeat twice daily: wash, dry, moisturize. That's the whole routine. Simple is right.

What's Normal This Week

  • Redness and swelling (first 2–3 days)
  • Oozing plasma (clear or slightly yellowish liquid) — normal
  • Tenderness and warmth to the touch
  • Skin starting to feel tight and beginning to peel

Products to Use

  • ✅ Aquaphor (thin layer, first 3 days)
  • ✅ Lubriderm Daily Moisture (unscented)
  • ✅ Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream
  • ✅ Aveeno Daily Moisturizing (fragrance-free)

Products to AVOID

  • ❌ Anything with fragrance, dye, or alcohol
  • ❌ Bacitracin or Neosporin (can cause ink reactions in some people)
  • ❌ Coconut oil (heavy, can clog pores)
  • ❌ Vaseline (petroleum-heavy, suffocates the tattoo)
  • ❌ Sunscreen on a healing tattoo
  • ❌ Hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol

Lifestyle This Week

  • No swimming, soaking, or hot tubs
  • No direct sun exposure on the tattoo
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing over the tattoo
  • Don't wrap it back up after the initial bandage is removed unless directed
  • Keep pets away from the fresh tattoo (bacteria in mouths and on paws)

Days 3–14: The Peel

Around day 3–5, your tattoo will start peeling. This is completely normal and actually a sign it's healing. The dead outer skin is shedding to reveal the healed layer underneath.

The Golden Rule: Do NOT pick, peel, or scratch. Peeling skin is attached to the healing tattoo underneath. Pull it off early and you pull out ink. Your patience here directly determines how clean the healed tattoo looks.

The "Milky" Stage

Around week 2, your tattoo may look cloudy, dull, or washed out. This is the layer of dead skin sitting over the healed ink. Keep moisturizing. Once it fully sheds, the vibrancy returns.

Weeks 2–4: Continued Care

Surface peeling is mostly done. The tattoo looks healed but the deeper layers are still knitting together. Maintain:

  • Once-daily moisturizing
  • Continued sun avoidance or SPF 50+ when outside
  • No swimming until fully through this phase

Long-Term Care (After Full Healing)

Your tattoo is fully healed at 3–6 months. Now it's about preservation:

  • Sunscreen always: UV is the single biggest cause of tattoo fading. Apply SPF 50+ to tattooed areas whenever they'll see sun. Every time.
  • Stay hydrated: Healthy, hydrated skin holds tattoo ink better and ages more gracefully.
  • Moisturize regularly: A daily lotion habit keeps your tattoos looking fresh.
  • Touch-ups: Fine line and light-colored tattoos may need touch-ups 1–2 years in. Bold traditional work can go decades without one.

Common Mistakes That Ruin Tattoos

  1. Over-moisturizing: Creates a wet environment that can cause ink to bleed. Thin layer, twice a day — that's it.
  2. Picking the peel: Costs you ink every single time.
  3. Sun exposure: Color tattoos, especially, will fade dramatically if exposed to sun during healing.
  4. Swimming too soon: Chlorine and bacteria wreck healing skin.
  5. Tight clothing rubbing the tattoo: Friction = disrupted healing = potential blowout at edges.
  6. Ignoring signs of infection: If you see spreading redness, warmth, pus, or you develop a fever — contact us or see a doctor. Infections are rare but serious.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a tattoo take to heal?

The surface of a tattoo heals in 2–4 weeks. Full healing (dermis layer) takes 3–6 months. You should follow aftercare diligently for the full surface healing period.

What lotion is best for tattoo aftercare?

Unscented, dye-free lotions work best: Lubriderm, Cetaphil, Aveeno (unscented), or Aquaphor (sparingly). Avoid anything with fragrance, alcohol, or petroleum-heavy products in the first week.

Is it normal for a tattoo to peel?

Yes — peeling is a normal part of healing, usually starting around day 3–5. Do NOT pick or peel the skin. Let it flake off naturally to avoid pulling out ink.

Can I go swimming with a new tattoo?

No. Avoid pools, lakes, oceans, and hot tubs for at least 3–4 weeks. Submerging a healing tattoo introduces bacteria and can wash out ink.

When can I go in the sun with a new tattoo?

Keep your new tattoo out of direct sunlight for at least 4 weeks. Once healed, always apply SPF 50+ sunscreen to tattooed areas to prevent fading.
